The Irish Examiner reported that Simon Cowell, current Judge on 'Britain's Got Talent', uses a booster seat to look taller on the show, and also uses a panel of four lights that shine down on him when he is giving his opinion of the different contestants.

Apparently the lights give him a 'healthy glow' and slim down his face by keeping his face from casting shadows.

Oregon BEST awarded a grant to the research teams to develop a new window coating that would decrease electricity bills.  The new coating is supposed to cut heat transfer through the window glass, while simultaneously letting more natural light in through the window.

The researchers say that each side of a piece of plain glass reduces the entry of visible light by 4%.  So on a double-pane window, 16% of available light is being blocked from entering the room.

The coating would not only let more of this light in, but it would also help regulate the heat transfer that happens at windows.  This would keep the warmth out when you didn't want it, and keep the cold from getting in during winter months as well.

“If you were to put the coating we’re developing on all the architectural glass out there, you would save hundreds of millions of dollars in electricity currently used for lighting,” said one researcher.  “We are confident that our combination of chemical engineering and nanostructures will allow us to attain an unprecedented infrared-to-visible light ratio.”

In private homes it's easy to make the decision to switch or stay with the current types of bulbs.  The homeowner alone, or with their partner, can usually decide within a few minutes, and make the purchase of the new energy efficient bulbs without much up front investment. 

An Arizona Home Owners Association is now trying to join the guild of people saving money through the use of energy efficient lighting.  Their process of decision making is much more complicated though.  

The desire to make the switch to efficient lighting came when analyzing their operating costs for a 4 mile stretch of road that they pay to light with street lights.  The costs were around $50,000 per year!  

The association created a committee to research ways to lower these costs for the homeowners.  They thought about lowering the bill by turning off a few of the lights at a time, or all of them together.  But when they learned they could save tens of thousands of dollars per year with new, efficient lighting, while still keeping all the lights on, they were sold.

The association says the initial investment will be around $150,000, but after paying off the investment, they plan to be able to make physical, aesthetic upgrades to the  neighborhood which will increase property values.

The HOA is set to vote now on the types of bulbs that they want to install in the street lights, along with their color and intensity.  The installation will happen in June or July.

As if electricity bills weren't enough, New Jersey businesses are now getting fined for leaving their business sign light on after 11pm.

The Mayor of Paramus, NJ (the location where the fines are being distributed), says it's against city ordinance to leave sign lights on after 11pm because it takes away from the community's quality and character. 

The fines are $200 or more, and the businesses have to appear in court regarding these fines as well.

In the first 3 months of 2013, more than 40 businesses have received fines: from mom and pop shops, to large corporate chains.

A Team at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany conducted a study focused on male blackbirds and how they developed differently in urban as opposed to forested areas.  They found that male blackbirds in urban areas affected by the constant night lighting grew, matured, and mated faster than those in darker forested areas.

They confirmed this experiment's findings by capturing forested birds and exposing them to artificial light at night for 10 months.

Scientists do not yet know why this faster maturation happens from the artificial light.  They don't know if it speeds up the birds' metabolism, allows them to hunt longer and eat more providing more energy for them, or what the real reason is that the light affects them in this way.

When the light turns on, it still remains dark to onlookers.  Then as the light starts to heat up the chocolate, small holes begin to form.  Soon after light starts peeking through the chocolate as the walls begin to melt away.

Why anyone would want something like this, I don't know.

With Valentine's Day just a week away, you might be saying to yourself, "What is a unique gift I could get for her/him?" At about 8:38 PM EST with 13:22 left in the third quarter, half of the halide lamps in the Superdome went dark.  It wasn't just the lights that went out though.  According to a sideline reporter, half the power was out at the stadium- the announcers couldn't even speak to the public right away because of the outage.

CBS' studio host James Brown came on around 8:46 PM EST and said the outage was caused by a power surge and that some of the power had been restored, and the lights were beginning to come back on, but would take 15 minutes to recycle.

At about 8:54 PM EST viewers are assured that full light should be returned within 15 minutes.

At 9:05 PM EST a camera pans over the stadium as lights are now back on and viewers can see that the upper bank of lights are left off, likely to keep another surge from happening.

Tweets about the outage were quite entertaining!  One person wrote, "@beyonce please unplug your curling iron."  Another said, "so during the #poweroutage I just saved 15% by switching my car insurance to Geico."  Harry Potter even tweeted about this event saying, "Ron picked the worst possible time to use his Deluminator."

So whether your team won or lost yesterday, at least you got the entertainment of watching REAL reality television for a half hour during the Super Bowl!

This new lighting product is called FIPEL, short for field-induced polymer electroluminescent technology.

A Wake Forest University professor, David Carroll, developed the new light source and explains how it works.  He says it's similar to how a microwave works. 

"Take a potato, for example. When you place your potato in the microwave and press start, the device hits the potato with microwaves that induce what's known as a displacement current, meaning it makes the water molecules in the potato flip back and forth. This heats the potato up. What Carroll and his team have done is develop a special type of plastic that, when hit with an electric current, induces a displacement current in the same way. But in this case, it doesn't give off heat, it gives off light."

The light source is made up of many layers of plastic, each layer being more than 100,000 thinner than a human hair, and the layers are inserted between an aluminum electrode and a transparent conducting electrode.  An electric current is then passed through the device, and it stimulates the plastic causing it to light up.

This lighting source is at the same level of efficiency with LED lighting, but is said to be able to reach only a slightly lower level of efficiency than the LED as LED technology continues to improve.

FIPELs have one thing over the LED bulbs though.  Most LED bulbs contain mercury, but FIPELs contain no caustic chemicals, and are easily recyclable because they are made of plastic.

Carroll says he has dreams that in five years people will be using the word, light bulb and FIPEL interchangeably.

Forbes reports that the Hue LED lights don't run off a normal on/off switch- instead they are controlled by an iOS app which allows these digital lights to be controlled completely through a list of settings within the app.  There are ranges of colors and brightnesses that the lights can be set to.  You can set the lights manually, or you can choose preset options like "Relax" or "Beach."

In the Netherlands a design team called Studio Roosegaarde created a photo luminescent powder that they will be using as road markings starting in the middle of next year.

The powder will gather energy throughout the day from the sun, and then will glow for about 10 hours at night.  

Not only will there be lane markers and shoulder markers glowing at night, but they will also use the powder to indicate when the roads might be slippery.  When the temperature falls to a certain degree, snowflakes will glow on the roads to warn drivers of the icy conditions.

Daan Roosegaarde, the designer, says he already has interest from India about bringing the technology there, and he hopes to bring it to the United States as well.

Well astronauts have had a very hard time getting good sleep since the beginning of the space program, and now scientists have created a way to help them with that using LED lights.

NASA is now going to start switching out all the old fluorescent bulbs that are currently in their ships and adding a myriad of LEDs alternating between blue, white, and red based on the time of day.

Blue light is said to stimulate the brain and keep people awake during the day, while the red light is supposed to help create melatonin which helps people feel sleepy.  

This switch in lighting will more similarly mimic real daylight and will help the astronauts to get better sleep.

This is an $11.2 million project that is set to be complete by 2016.

David Carrol, the scientist in charge of creating this new technology says the lighting is called field-induced polymer electrolumenescent or FIPEL technology.  It creates the soft white light that the human eye prefers, as opposed to the yellowish light produced by fluorescent bulbs, and the bluish light from the LED bulbs.

Carrol also says these lights are safer than other light sources because they are shatterproof, meaning that you won't have to worry about a HAZMAT situation if a light were to fall from the ceiling or elsewhere.

The team at Wake Forest says these new lights work by using a nano-engineered polymer matrix to convert a charge into light.  The devices are built with three layers of white-emitting polymer blended with a small amount of nanomaterials that glow when stimulated.

Carrol boasts that the FIPEL lights are twice as efficient as fluorescent lights, and are similar to LEDS in efficiency.

According to the Wake Forest team these FIPEL lights could be available for consumer purchase as early as next year.

Researchers at the Barrow Neurological Institute were also interested in saving people across the country billions on their electric bill.  In order to do this they ran an experiment on different types of lighting and how the brain interpreted that lighting.  They found that they had the ability to "tune" lighting devices in a way that worked more efficiently with the brain.  This meant that a person perceived more brightness coming from a device even though the device was using less energy than a normal lighting device.

"We found a temporal sweet spot in visual perception that can be exploited to obtain significant savings by redesigning light emitting devices to flicker with optimal dynamics to activate visual system neurons in the human brain," says Dr Stephen Macknik who helped with the experiment.

The researchers predicted that if every light from the common house bulb to the lights in our cell phones were transitioned into lights that took advantage of this new lighting technique, that the world would save  billions in electric costs.
